Dr. Peter Connolly

geomechanics and structural geology

Dr. Peter Connolly is a structural geologist who obtained his Ph.D. from Imperial College, London in 1997. His technical specialisations are structural geology, geomechanics, the numerical simulation of geological phenomena and structural fieldwork.

Joining Chevron’s research department in 2005 Connolly pioneered making numerical simulation of present day geological systems (aka mechanical earth modelling) a mainstream product with applications across the upstream including geomechanics, drilling, completions, exploration and reservoir management . Connolly’s last contributions at Chevron were on the principals and simulation of coupled flow, fracturing and reservoir quality within low permeability (i.e. unconventional) reservoirs.

During his studies Connolly spent 4 years working as both mud logger and wellsite geologist on exploration rigs in Syria and Egypt. He held post-doctoral research positions in  London UK (fluid pathways in deforming basins), Amsterdam, NL (numerical simulation of fluid migration in fault zones), Montpellier, FR (field and analogue analysis of fracture corridors) and Karlsruhe, DE (numerical simulation of large scale geo-systems and the World Stress Map).

Connolly left Chevron in mid-2018 to pursue a long held passion of making geological fieldwork more accessible to the general public. Please visit geo-expeditions.com to find out more or if you are interested in requesting field based classes.
